2022-2027 PARKS AND RECREATION MASTER PLAN

The 2022-2027 Ferndale Parks and Recreation Plan is an update of the City of Ferndale’s previous Parks and Recreation Plan and an extension of the City of Ferndale Master Plan. This Parks and Recreation Plan carries the overarching open space strategy forward to guide the specifics of planning, developing, programming, and sustaining the City’s recreation, land, and facilities. This plan update to the 2017-2021 plan is expected to be amended in 2022 to fully capture the alignment with the Plan Ferndale Master Plan and Climate Action Plan. View the full plan here.

MARTIN ROAD PARK

The super exciting Martin Road Revitalization Project is underway. Get ready for four new pickleball courts, a basketball court, a pavilion, a shade structure, drinking fountains, and accessible benches, tables, parking spaces, and paths.

We are looking forward to these improvements and the support for the park space and Splash Pad. We are grateful to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Oakland County, The MI Enhancement Grant, American in Bloom, and ARPA Funding for this opportunity. We are crossing our fingers for a completed renovation this fall.

WILSON PARK

The Wilson Park Improvement Project construction began on May 6, 2024! Wilson Park will be transformed through new amenities and features to increase accessibility and activity throughout the area.

  • The park is closed for the duration of construction, which is anticipated to conclude by the end of summer. In the meantime, consider visiting one of the other 13 City parks. Learn more on our parks page.
  • Safety is the top priority for the City and the construction staff. Entering Wilson Park property during or after working hours is not permitted. Additionally, handling any construction items or equipment is not allowed and will be subject to legal action.
  • Due to the nature of construction, there may be noise throughout the day, beginning in the morning and subsiding in the evening (7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.). Construction activity will take place from Monday to Saturday, weather permitting. Construction staff will do their best to minimize noise disruptions in the process.
  • The Wilson Dog Park will remain open for the duration of construction. For more information about becoming a member, visit the Dog Park page.
  • The City will also extend awareness and care to the park’s historic Ginkgo Tree.  This will not be affected, except to add signage.

The project’s main components include an ADA-accessible walking path throughout the park, new playground equipment with accessible features, a new picnic shelter, and a parking lot expansion and improvement with two ADA spots. The project will also welcome new benches, picnic tables, a drinking fountain, a bike rack & repair station, new trash and recycling bins, and signage highlighting improvements and features.

The Parks and Recreation Department has worked diligently to secure more than $400,000 in grant funding from sources to help bring this project to fruition.  These grant sources include the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Oakland County Parks and Recreation, Gametime, the Ralph C. Wilson Foundation, America in Bloom, and the American Academy of Dermatology.

"Wilson Park's transformation is more than just a project; it's a promise to our community,” said LaReina Wheeler, Director of Parks and Recreation.  “We're creating a space where everyone can come together, play, and connect. This project isn't just about asphalt and concrete; it's about building a stronger, more vibrant community."
